LEO KIʻEKIʻE and HULA with NICK CASTILLO and KARA CHOW - FRIDAY 11/22 10am at KŌKEʻE LODGE

Introduction to Leo Kiʻekiʻe - Hawaiian falsetto singing - including a history lesson, vocal exercises and mele, followed by introduction and history of hula and the learning of mele and motions to go with. INVASIVE SPECIES REMOVAL AND NATIVE PLANTS with KRCP - FRIDAY 11/22 10am at CCC CAMP

We are partnering again with the Kōkeʻe Resource Conservation Program to offer gathering attendees a special opportunity to learn about Kauaiʻs native ecosystems and help eradicate invasive species. We will start the workshop off with a short orientation of Kauai ecology and the activities of the KRCP. After that we then head out to the worksite to do invasive weed removal and outplanting of native plants from our nursery. This is a very unique opportunity to give back to our gracious host, one of the most beautiful and threatened environments in the world, Kōkee State Park.

We’ll explore a variety of rhythmic systems from around the world, including polyrhythms and phasing.

DANCING WITH OTHERS/DANCING WITH RHYTHM with EVIE LADIN - FRIDAY 11/22 12:30pm at KŌKEʻE LDOGE

Open to all levels, especially those who “can’t dance,” Evie will explore basic partnering and weight sharing, feeling the beat, understanding rhythms, calls and patterns in traditional dance, and easy clogging steps you can use to add rhythm to the music.

We'll work through square dance figures, and learn moves like "grand right & left", "box the gnat", "ladies chain" and more. An experienced and patient teacher, Evie is adept at both breaking down movements to their basic components, and building complex patterns. Her primary goal is for every level of dancer to enjoy dancing, gaining fluidity as well as understanding a dancer's role in the music.

Let’s learn all the parts of a stringband! This class is for all instruments and abilities as we use our voices to emulate the fiddle, banjo, guitar and bass in a stringband. This will help you be more aware of the role of all the instruments at a jam or in a band, and how they all work together to make that Old Time sound!

Free admission to the Kauai Old Time Gathering when you register an ʻulu dish for the cookoff. Plan to arrive with your ʻulu dish at CCC Camp no later than 11am Saturday November 23rd. Prizes awarded for Best Sweet, Best Savory, Most Original, Most Traditional as well as Peopleʻs Choice. Prizes include two nights stay at Kōkeʻe Cabins, sunset tour at the Allerton Garden and gift certificates to Kōkeʻe Lodge, Kauai Roastery, Saddle Room and Kauai Beer Co among other local goods. Dr. Noa Kekuewa Lincoln from the University of Hawaii will be giving a talk on ʻulu. Winners announced under the main CCC tent at 4:00 pm!

PITCHFORK BANJO with Cameron DeWhitt - SATURDAY 11/23 1 pm at CCC CAMP

Cameron DeWhitt is the innovator behind pitchfork banjo, a three-finger clawhammer technique that allows the player unprecedented access to melody, harmony, and rhythms typically roped off from clawhammer players. In his workshop, Cameron will demonstrate some advanced applications of pitchfork, lead an exercise to develop the right hand technique, and teach some basic pitchfork applications using a well-known tune.

COCONUT BASKET WEAVING with UNCLE ONIO PUNZAL - SATURDAY 11/23 1:30pm in THE LIBRARY at the CCC CAMP - Limit 10 people, sign up in CCC Camp Mess Hall starting at 9 am on 11/23.

Eugene Onio Punzal, a Kauai native, was born and raised on the eastside of Kauai, in Kapaa. As a young child, Uncle Onio spent a lot of time surfing, and took up Coconut Weaving from the Lifeguards stationed at the beach. Uncle Onio is now a Volunteer Cultural Weaving Practitioner at the Kauai Museum, where he holds monthly weaving classes. As part of an Outreach Cultural Program with the Kauai Museum, Uncle Onio does free coconut weaving demonstration to any non-profit, or to children in any Public or Private Schools, here on Kauai. Since it's start a year ago, Uncle Onio has demonstrated to over 300 children on Kauai. That number would quadruple, if not for the fact that Uncle Onio also babysits his grandchildren Mon. - Fri.

Join Uncle Onio as he shares his cultural knowledge and teaches you how to make a coconut basket, a rapidly fading Hawaiian art form.

HEEBIE JEEBIES SCAT HARMONIES and DANCE with BELLES of the LEVEE - SATURDAY 11/23 2:30pm at CCC CAMP

Heebie Jeebies, first recorded in 1925 by Louis Armstrong Hot Five is rumored to be the first recorded scat solo because supposedly Louis forgot the lyrics. The song accompanied a dance craze. It was later arranged by the Boswell Sisters with lots of harmonized scats. Learn the scats and the dance!

GEOGRAFÍA MUSICAL DEL CAMINO REAL con LONE PIÑON - SUNDAY 11/24 10am at KŌKEʻE LODGE

The Camino Real was the old trade route that connected Santa Fe to Mexico City. LONE PIÑON will play tunes from northern New Mexico, the South Texas borderlands, Northern Mexico, East Central Mexico (la Huasteca), and West Central Mexico (Tierra Caliente), showing the interconnections of the different style regions, sometimes making a musical map of where the different styles fit together and overlap. They will also touch on the influence of the Santa Fe Trail on the later development of Northern New Mexican fiddle music, which includes repertoire shared with Southeastern American, midwestern, and Appalachian old-time music, as well as the influence of Western Swing.
